When Your Oviedo Drains Keep Clogging: Drain Cleaning for One Fixture, Several or the Main Line
A drain that is slow once is a nuisance. One that keeps clogging, or a toilet that gurgles when the washer drains, is telling you something. Call Oviedo FL Expert Plumbers and describe which fixtures are affected, and use this page to work out how big the problem is before anyone brings a machine.

One slow drain or the whole house? A two-minute test
The most useful fact in a drain call is how many fixtures are affected. Run the kitchen sink, flush a toilet and run a shower, one at a time, and watch the lowest drain in the house, often a tub or a floor drain, for bubbling or rising water.
| What you see | Likely location | What it means for the visit |
|---|---|---|
| One sink or tub is slow; the rest are normal | That fixture's own trap or short drain | A short clearing at that fixture |
| Two fixtures on the same side of the house are slow | The shared branch line | A longer cable run, and a reason to ask about a camera |
| Toilets gurgle or the lowest drain bubbles when another fixture runs | The main drain | Stop running water; this is a main-line job |
| Every drain is slow, and worse after rain | The main line or the point where it leaves the house | See the sewer line page before paying for cable work |
This is a first guess, not a diagnosis. It still changes the quote, because clearing a trap and clearing a main line are different jobs with different tools.
What is safe to try before you call
A plunger, used with a cup seal over the drain and some patience, clears many soft clogs at a single sink or tub. Under a sink, you can put a bucket below the trap, unscrew it and clean it out by hand. A hair catch in the shower prevents the most common tub clog.
Skip chemical drain openers. They can leave caustic liquid sitting in a pipe that will not drain, which is a hazard for you and for whoever opens the pipe next. If you already used one, tell the plumber before work starts.
Shower and tub clogs are mostly hair held together by soap film. Pulling the hair out of the drain opening with a plastic strip often clears them, and it is worth doing every few weeks if several people share the bathroom.
Do not run a garbage disposal against a clog, and do not keep pouring water down a drain that is already backing up. If water is rising in a second fixture, stop using water in the house.
- Plunge the clogged fixture with the overflow opening blocked
- Clean the trap under a sink into a bucket
- Pull hair from the tub or shower drain
- Stop and call if a second fixture starts to back up
Kitchen sink clogs that keep coming back: grease, food and the disposal
Kitchen drains clog differently from bathroom drains. Grease cools in the pipe and coats the wall, and food particles catch on it. A cable can punch through the middle and leave the coating in place, which is why the same sink slows again a few weeks later.
The dishwasher drain usually joins the sink drain or the disposal, so a dishwasher that leaves standing water points to the same clog. If the disposal hums or is jammed, that is a separate repair covered under a jammed or leaking disposal.
- Wipe grease from pans into the trash, not the sink
- Run hot water for a few seconds after the dishwasher drains
- Keep fibrous scraps, such as celery and corn husks, out of the disposal

Cable, camera or jetting: choosing the method for the clog you have
| Method | Good for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Hand or motorized cable | Soft clogs at a sink, tub or short branch line | Can open a path without cleaning the pipe wall, so grease clogs return |
| Camera inspection | Repeat clogs, an unknown cause or before any digging | Shows the pipe; it does not clear it |
| High-pressure water jetting | Grease and sludge coating the pipe wall | A separate service, covered under water jetting for stubborn buildup |
If a drain has clogged more than twice in a year, ask for a camera look. Ask the plumber to show you the recording and to name the cause: grease, roots, a sagging section or a broken pipe. A cause you can see is a better basis for a quote than a guess.
What to ask for after a camera inspection
- A copy of the recording, or photos taken at the problem spot
- How far along the pipe the problem sits, measured from the access point
- Whether the pipe is cracked, sagging, offset at a joint or only coated
- What the plumber recommends next, and what happens if you wait
When the camera shows a damaged or collapsed main line, the job moves out of drain cleaning and into a damaged or collapsed main line.
Heavy rain, a gurgling toilet and the yard drain: who owns what
Hurricane Ian in 2022 flooded lakes, a river and several Oviedo neighborhoods, and Tropical Storm Fay flooded roads in 2008. After a storm like that, a main line can back up when the ground is saturated. If several drains slow or gurgle after heavy rain, stop running water and call before you flush again.
A yard drain, French drain or driveway culvert is cleared differently from a plumbing drain. A culvert or street inlet may belong to the City or to an HOA, not to you. Public Works at 407-971-5681 can say whether a street inlet is the City's before you pay anyone to clear it.

How often should drains be cleaned? Signs it is time, not a date
No single schedule fits every house. A fixed interval would be a guess, so use signals instead. A drain that needs help twice in a few months is already telling you the cause has not been cleared.
- The same fixture slows again within a few weeks of being cleared
- A gurgle from a toilet or tub when another fixture drains
- A sewer smell at a floor drain or sink that comes and goes
- Water that sits in a sink or tub longer after each use
When you call, say which of those you have seen and how many fixtures are involved. This page is written for homes. If the drain serves a restaurant or another business kitchen, say so when you call.
