Water on the Floor? Burst and Broken Pipe Repair in Oviedo, FL Starts With the Main Shutoff

Water is what turns a split pipe into a wrecked room, so the first job is to stop it. Call Oviedo FL Expert Plumbers once the main is closed, or right away if you cannot close it, and tell us what failed and where the water went.

The first five minutes: find and close the main shutoff

The main shutoff controls water to the whole house. In many homes it sits where the supply line enters the house or near the water heater, but locations vary, so look before you need it. Do this in order:

  1. Close the main. A lever handle is closed when it sits across the pipe, and a round handle closes clockwise.
  2. Open the lowest faucet in the house to let the pressure and the remaining water drain out.
  3. Keep out of rooms where water is near outlets, cords or the electrical panel.
  4. Photograph the break and the water before you start to clean.

If water is coming from the street side of the meter or out of the meter box itself, call City of Oviedo Public Works at 407-971-5681 during the day, or the City's after-hours utilities line at 407-256-5026. If you cannot close your own shutoff, call us, describe the valve and keep everyone away from the water. Do not force a stuck valve with a wrench.

Emergency framing alone does not make a repair faster, so be specific when you call. A description of what failed, what you closed and where the water is now lets the plumber bring the right parts.

Have these facts ready when you call:

  • Where the water is coming from and whether the main is closed
  • What the pipe looks like, if you can see it: copper, plastic or gray metal
  • Which rooms have water on the floor and whether it is still spreading
  • Whether any ceiling is stained, bulging or dripping

Broken is not always burst: a cracked line under the yard

A burst in the house announces itself. A broken line in the yard does not. Clues include a lawn patch that sinks or stays wet, low pressure at every tap, a meter that spins with the house quiet and a sudden sound of running water near the street.

A buried line can crack for ordinary reasons: shifting soil, a heavy vehicle, roots or an earlier dig that nicked the pipe. Tell the plumber what was done in that part of the yard recently, because that often explains the break.

If the broken pipe is part of a sprinkler system, say which supply feeds it. The City says reclaimed irrigation water can never be interconnected with any other water system, so a break on that line is fixed as irrigation and never tied into household pipes.

A crack in the buried line often shows up first as a wet patch in the yard or a meter that will not sit still.

Photograph a burst pipe before you mop: what insurers ask for

A burst pipe usually becomes an insurance conversation. The photos you take in the first ten minutes are often the best evidence of what happened, because cleanup removes it.

  • The broken pipe and the spot where it failed, before anyone repairs it
  • The water line on walls and furniture, and the rooms affected
  • Damaged contents, with brand labels and model numbers visible
  • The meter and the shutoff valve in their closed position
  • A video walk-through with the date and time showing

Ask the plumber to keep the failed section of pipe if it can be saved. It can show whether the pipe corroded, split from pressure or was damaged by something else, and that matters if a claim is disputed.

Patch the section, replace the run or repipe: what to ask in the quote

A burst is a symptom, and the repair should fit the cause. A single split on pipe that is otherwise sound can be cut out and replaced. A pipe that has failed before, or one with visible corrosion nearby, points to replacing more.

A clamp or push-fit coupling can stop a leak in one visit. Ask whether it is meant to be permanent and have the answer written on the invoice. A temporary fix that stays in a wall for years is how a second burst happens.

If a pipe froze and split

A frozen pipe can split along its length, and the damage often shows only after the ice thaws and water starts to flow. If you find a frozen section, keep the water to that line shut off, never use a torch or open flame to thaw it, and open a faucet on that line so thawing water has somewhere to go.

The repair is the same as for any other split: the damaged section is replaced. The extra step is checking nearby lines that went through the same cold, such as outdoor hose bibs and runs through a garage or attic.

After the break: who handles drying, drywall and digging

Plumbing repair stops the water but does not dry the house. Wet drywall, insulation and flooring need removal and drying, which is covered under water removal after a pipe break. Rebuilding drywall and paint is a separate trade, so ask for it to be quoted separately and you can compare the pieces.

If the failed pipe is a buried line between the meter and the house, the repair means digging. A Sunshine 811 ticket is required at least two full business days before ground is broken, under Chapter 556 of the Florida Statutes. Public Works at 407-971-5681 can tell you where the City's responsibility ends at your address.

A burst you did not see happen, such as a ceiling that stains days later, is closer to a hidden leak. In that case, pinpointing a hidden leak comes before any repair. This page is written for homes. If the break is in a business property, say so when you call.
